Getting a pool is all fun and games until you have to maintain it.
It is really important that you take on the responsibility of keeping your water clear and beautiful for your swims. Having your own pool is great, but taking care of it is important if you want it to stay beautiful and sparkling! Here are some tips on how to keep your pool glimmering and beautiful:
You will want to give your pool a good deep cleaning every once in a while. This means a good scrub down to remove any large debris using a heavy-duty skimmer, brushing your walls thoroughly with a pool brush, and vacuuming. If you suspect you might be having an issue with algae, vacuum it.
You may also want to get rid of any crud that might be causing your pool water to look cloudy by mega-dosing it in chlorine or whatever sanitizer you use. This is called ‘shocking’ your pool, and it will eliminate any cloudiness that might be from the bacteria, contaminants, and algae. You may want to double or triple shock if you are experiencing algae invading your pool.
Filtering your pool for eight hours a day is important, and it’s likely that your pool will be doing this through their pumps anyways. You should deep clean or replace your filter before you run it, especially after you shock your pool to ensure that the extra sanitizer is rinsed out of your circulation system and that clean water is being distributed.
Use your bottom drains. The main skimmer of your pool is at the surface and will not be able to reach any of the debris that might accumulate at the bottom of your pool. Using your bottom drains will suck any sediment away and bring them straight to your filter. Hook up your manual vacuum cleaner and try to center it in on the bottom of your pool. Now turn it upside down, allowing your filter to pull the water from the bottom of your pool with the vacuum head, which will release filtered water through the pool’s return jet.
Floc your pool with a flocculant to allow the debris to sink to the bottom in order to vacuum it out before topping it back off for your swim. You might also want to use a pool additive that will clarify your water. This should be part of your pool’s weekly routine as it will keep your pool looking fresh and well-maintained.
By maintaining your pool, testing its balance, skimming, vacuuming, balancing, and maintaining the filter weekly, you can keep your pool looking clean, clear, and healthy all season long. Prevention is the best way to get the results you want. Follow all these maintenance steps and you should have clear, clean, gleaming water in no time.
